design is an idealization, while execution is reality. Happy Path vs. Reality

The core difference is that a designed process is an idealized blueprint, while the actual process run is the messy, real-world execution shaped by human behavior, system constraints, and unexpected variables.
 

A process is designed to show how things are supposed to happen, but in reality, people often take different paths due to delays, exceptions, or unexpected situations. Process Intelligence helps compare the planned process with what actually happens, making it easier to spot bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement.

Activity based on the user 

A process is a chain of actions performed while carrying out a business. So the business stakeholders design it according to how they believe their business would be carried out. But in the real world scenarios there could be many deviations that complicate the overall design.

Processing of data and bottlenecks 

The difference is that process is designed such a way that it is expected to follow that sequence correctly , but actually runs totally opposite and doesnt always follow the sequence as expected

Basically while designing a process it is quite easy just to decide the flow of the process as we wish to. Now if we ponder upon the exceptions in the cases the process then takes a vast turn. Its more of different cases and not just a straight flow.

Whilst designing the process we intend to design the process in a structured manner but, the actual functioning of the process is way too complex similar to a mirror maze or an spider web i.e, challenging to understand completely.

The key difference between this would be the construction of the workflows or how the events logs are stored /registered

There may be the deviation in process that is designed by us and actually how the process runs due to Uncertainty and uncontrollable things in Process 

The difference between the designed process and the actual process is called a process deviation or process gap. The actual proceess run is shaped by human behaviour system and constraints and also a very messy process .

But designed process is an idealized blueprint where blueprint is an data collection from different sources 

Processing of data and bottlenecks 

Process is designed based on traditional structure, just like Entity Relationship Model and it is run based on Object Centric Process Modelling, means it can have multiple deviations across the various processes

Process of running the perfect sequence of task

the simplicity converts into complex interaction between different process and deviation is introduced in actual process

A process design defines the planned workflow, while process execution reflects how the workflow is actually carried out in real-world operations also the process execution may be messy at times like at wide picture there are many processes at one time

The process is designed with a set of sequential steps and activity logs which are supposed to be completed within the given timestamp. Whereas, the same does not USUALLY happen in the real world execution. That is because of the delays, branched activities, mishaps or some flaws or errors caused due to human or machine error. 

Celonis, the designed process is the ideal “to‑be” flow (your documented BPMN/SOP), while the actual process is the “as‑is” flow reconstructed from real system event logs, showing what really happens in practice.
