Based on the fact that BW is NetWeaver based so the setup is going to be same as ECC, means RFC will be needed.

For the infocubes, as we run OpenSQL commands against the Data Dictionary object via the ABAP layer, i.e. 

SELECT * FROM infocube

 . From what we saw, infocubes unfortunately don’t support this.
