In celonis documentation in one place it says to setup extractor server for SAP HANA , and in another place it says to access data using API .

So , a bit confused on this . Any help is highly appreciated.

Hello @ayan.banyo ,

For SAP HANA, are you using on-premise or cloud? Also the SAP HANA here is the database, not the S/4HANA or SAP ECC on HANA which is an ERP system.

If you are trying to connect to database and it is behind firewall, it is require to have it uplink and extractor behind. Let me know if you still have question. Guide you are looking for is https://docs.celonis.com/en/database--jdbc--connection.html.

The one mention by @Guillermo Gost is what I refer as ERP system, first link refer to on-premise (even hosted in cloud but if customization allowed and not manage by SAP, it is on-premise) and second is cloud version. So it depend on your setup.

Thank you.

Hmmm.... I find only 2 links, one to connect to On Premises SAP HANA - that requires an extractor https://docs.celonis.com/en/connection-to-on-premise-sap-ecc-and-s-4hana.html

Other to connect to Public Cloud Sap HANA (via API)

https://docs.celonis.com/en/sap-s-4hana-public-cloud-connection--extractor-builder-.html

So my guess is all depends if SAP HANA is exposed to Internet via API, or, as it is very common, it is hidden from Internet and you need an on-premise extractor as gateway.

Hi Guillermo,

Thanks for your response. This definitely helps, but I am not sure , why my client directly wanted to setup Extractor server for this when the API option is available and why Celonis recommended Extractor server route to my Client when there is an API option still available and most commonly used.

Security, mainly. SAP is a critical and core system, with sensitive information about the company. Thus, the standard approach is to isolate it inside the back-end zones, and only accesible from gateways or from specific segments of the internal network. Of course throw into the mix all the security "artillery": firewalls, IPS, IDS, etc...etc... etc...
